There were three of them who jumped in, their names were: Valeri Bezpalov, Alexie Ananenko and Boris Baranov. Valeri and Alexie were engineers at the plant, Boris was a plant worker. They had full knowledge of the danger, they dived down with scuba gear and a lamp, which failed however they still managed to find the valve. Valeri and Alexie died two weeks later in a Moscow hospital with Boris succumbing to death not long after. It is said that the radiation levels on their bodies were so high that they had to be buried in a lead coffin which was soldered shut.
